EU Prepared to Take Action Against Trump’s Tariff Threats

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa declared Sunday that the European Union is "ready to defend itself against any form of coercion" after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened sweeping tariffs tied to Greenland.

Costa said consultations with EU member states confirmed the bloc’s position "in support of and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland." He warned that tariffs "would undermine transatlantic relations" and are "incompatible with the EU-U.S. trade agreement," stressing that Europe will not hesitate to respond.

The Council president announced plans to convene an extraordinary meeting in the coming days to coordinate the bloc’s next steps.

Trump, in a Saturday post on X, said Washington would impose a 10-percent tariff beginning Feb. 1 on goods from eight European nations. He added the rate would climb to 25 percent on June 1 and remain until a deal is struck for the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland.

On Sunday, media reported that Brussels is weighing countermeasures, including 93 billion euros ($107.68 billion) in tariffs or restrictions on American firms operating in the EU market.
