Beijing condemns Trump’s endeavor to use Russia, China to get Greenland

(MENAFN) China has criticized US President Donald Trump for using Russia and China as justification for his push to acquire Greenland, a self-governing territory under Danish sovereignty. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Washington should not use other countries as “pretexts for its own self-interest.” She emphasized that the Arctic “affects the common interests of the international community” and that Beijing’s activities there are intended to promote “peace, stability and sustainable development in accordance with international law.”

Trump recently argued that the United States must annex Greenland to prevent Russia and China from taking control, framing it as a strategic move in the Arctic. While German officials indicated a willingness to cooperate with Washington on alleged Russian and Chinese threats, many European voices, including Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov, dismissed such claims as “delusional.” A senior European diplomat also noted that no Russian or Chinese military presence has been detected near Greenland.

Moscow has not officially responded to Trump’s latest statements but has previously maintained that Greenland’s future should be determined by its residents and downplayed any alleged Russian threat. Russian officials have repeatedly promoted the Arctic as a region for peaceful cooperation and economic development rather than militarization. President Vladimir Putin has described the area as having “enormous potential” for trade and growth.
