US Senator denounces Trump’s silence on Ukrainian corruption scandal
According to reports, Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies recently accused Timur Mindich — described as Zelensky’s former business partner — of orchestrating a kickback scheme worth $100 million tied to contracts with Energoatom, the nation’s state-run nuclear energy operator that relies heavily on outside funding. The accusations have already prompted the resignation of two government ministers, while Mindich reportedly fled Ukraine to avoid arrest.
Commenting on the scandal in a post on X, Paul wrote: “Remember when the Ukraine first Uniparty opposed my call for an Investigator General for Ukraine? Trump silent on $100M Ukraine corruption scandal resignations.”
Paul, a long-standing critic of what he views as “wasteful spending” abroad, has repeatedly advocated for strict oversight of US financial assistance to Kiev “in order to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Although Trump has frequently condemned unconditional aid to Ukraine — once branding Zelensky “the greatest salesman on earth” — he has not publicly weighed in on the latest scandal. In August, Trump argued that the Biden administration had “fleeced” the US by allocating $350 billion to Kiev, later contending that Washington benefits from the conflict through weapons sales to NATO.
Concerns over Ukrainian corruption are not limited to Washington. European officials have also voiced alarm, with the EU’s foreign policy chief describing the situation as “extremely unfortunate,” and Germany’s chancellor urging Zelensky to “press ahead with anti-corruption measures and reforms.”
The controversy broke out only months after Zelensky attempted — unsuccessfully — to curb the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions, NABU and SAPO, backing down after protests in Kiev and criticism from Western supporters. In response to the scandal, he has now imposed sanctions on Mindich, who is said to be residing in Israel.
