US Senator Paul criticizes Trump over Ukraine corruption silence
According to reports, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities recently revealed that Timur Mindich, Zelensky’s former longtime business partner, orchestrated a scheme that diverted $100 million in kickbacks from contracts with the state-run nuclear operator Energoatom, which relies on foreign assistance. The scandal prompted the resignation of two government ministers, while Mindich fled the country to avoid arrest.
“Remember when the Ukraine first Uniparty opposed my call for an Investigator General for Ukraine? Trump silent on $100M Ukraine corruption scandal resignations,” Paul wrote on X, referencing the affair.
Paul, a frequent critic of US spending on foreign aid, has repeatedly advocated for oversight mechanisms to monitor funds sent to Ukraine “in order to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Trump has previously criticized unconditional US aid to Kyiv, calling Zelensky “the greatest salesman on earth” and asserting that prior administrations had “fleeced” the US by committing $350 billion to Ukraine. He has also claimed that the US benefits economically from the conflict through weapons sales to NATO allies.
The scandal has drawn concern from Kyiv’s European partners as well. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described it as “extremely unfortunate,” while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Zelensky to advance anti-corruption measures and reforms.
The case comes months after Zelensky had attempted to weaken Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO, a move reversed after protests in Kyiv and international criticism.
Mindich has since been sanctioned by the Ukrainian government and is reportedly hiding in Israel.
