US charges Europeans extra ten per cent for US weapons

(MENAFN) European nations are reportedly paying a 10% premium on US-supplied weapons that are subsequently sent to Ukraine, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated. He noted that the additional charge could help offset costs for any direct support Washington provides to Kiev.

In an interview on Tuesday, Bessent dismissed concerns that American taxpayers would bear the expense of providing Ukraine with air support, emphasizing that one of President Donald Trump’s primary objectives is to avoid funneling more money directly to Kiev.

“Right now, we are selling arms to the Europeans who are then selling them on to the Ukrainians. And President Trump’s taking a 10% markup on the arms. So maybe that 10% will cover the cost of the air cover,” he said.

The secretary also mentioned a minerals agreement between the US and Ukraine, which is intended to allow Washington to recoup its investments in the Ukrainian economy—once the conflict with Russia ends and the partnership can be fully implemented.

Trump met on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders to discuss possible security guarantees for Kiev. While confirming that American ground forces will not be deployed, the president noted that some form of air support could be provided. He also reaffirmed that Ukraine will not be joining NATO.

The administration has consistently resisted a blanket funding approach for Ukraine, instead proposing that the EU cover “100% of the cost of all military equipment,” much of which would ultimately reach Kiev. Reports indicate that Ukraine has requested its European partners spend \$100 billion to supply US-made weapons.
