China Slaps EU Brandy Imports with Harsh Anti-Dumping Duties
(MENAFN) In a significant move on Friday, China announced it would impose anti-dumping duties and enforce price commitments on brandy imports from the European Union for the next five years, starting Saturday. This decision follows a comprehensive anti-dumping investigation led by China’s Ministry of Commerce.
The ministry’s final ruling stated, "The domestic-related brandy industry is threatened with substantial damage, and there is a causal relationship between dumping and the threat of substantial damage." The imposed dumping margins will range from 27.7% to 34.9%.
This move comes just days after a high-level strategic dialogue between China and the EU, where EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas met with Chinese officials in Brussels on Wednesday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, currently on a tour of Europe, is visiting Belgium, Germany, and France.
The timing of the announcement raises questions, with both sides preparing for the China-EU leaders' summit later this month. According to media, China is pushing for the two-day summit to be condensed into a single day. The summit, set for July 24 in Beijing, will involve EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa. The following day, the pair will attend a business summit in Hefei, central China, but Beijing's preference is to shorten the event to just one day in the capital.
